Snow Day!

Image
I was wandering around in my long-johns this morning, waiting for it to get light so I could pull on my snow pants and frolic with the dogs in that pristine snow that fell yesterday.  I decided to kill some time on the computer and discovered a new post on my daughter's blog.   Winterlust was its title; a new word she coined, defining it as "Similar to wanderlust, it is a strong desire to romp around in a winter wonderland." Yup, I've definitely got a taste of winterlust this morning.  Turns out we got quite a dump of snow last night and it shows no signs of stopping. I needed my snowshoes to make it up to the hill this morning.  It was quite a struggle to go as far as we did and the snow was coming down so heavily I decided not to bother trying to make it to the ridge, we just had a good slog through the snow and turned ourselves around not far past the first bench.  Hope you are enjoying some winterlust wherever you are. I wore my snow...

Making Tracks

Image
While taking out the garbage yesterday I noticed how many different little tracks and footy prints there are all around our front yard. Pulling the recycling to the curb  The quail march all over our lawn through every season. Wouldn't you fly over the stairs if you were a bird? Me and the birdies back and forth along the path as we go about our daily tasks. Big doggies walking past the house. Our kitties running down the driveway. A racoon whose footprints stop at... ...a broken mirror waiting to be tossed.  I would love to have  witnessed what happened when they saw their reflection. Lots of dog tracks at the corner by the Wishing Tree.  Someone lost the their.. "thing that you hook on your boots when you're walking on ice".  Looks like it  could match the print near the cat feet once it was stretched over a boot.

Creative Serendipity

I'm going back and forth between the memoir, home management and a photography project today. On this morning's dog walk I multi-tasked and took along my D200.  I'd forgotten how versatile it is compared to the iPhone which I've been using exclusively on this blog the last few weeks. I was really excited to get home and look at my photos.  I think because I learned much of my skills using film, I don't tend to look at every photo as I take it, preferring to wait until I get home and upload to my Mac. I'm going to try to stop doing that.  Halfway through my photo shoot I made an adjustment to my exposure setting without realizing it.   This happens all the time and I don't know how.  I somehow set the exposure compensation button to +4.0 .  This is something you might want to do in very bright sunlight, not on a grey overcast day like today.    I thought the photos were ruined but I decided to mess around with them on iphoto.  So...

Grateful for Snow

Image
I really enjoy the snow.  I grew up in a part of the world where the first snowfall was usually around Hallowe'en, and there was still ice on the lake in May.  I have extremely fond memories of my childhood/early teen winters. I remember the big hill in the woods at the end of our street where kids would gather  with wooden toboggans and crazy carpets.  There was figure skating in the backyard rinks and cheering on our high school hockey team (Go Warriors!) in freezing cold arenas.  One of my favourite memories was cross-country skiing through fluffy powder while blue shadows stretched over the moonlit snow of our only golf course.  We had bonfires at our camp on the frozen beach, while the cold air intensified the savoury aroma of Maple Leaf hotdogs and scorched marshmallows.  We went power tobogganing (that's what they called snowmobiles in the early days), with my parents and their friends who brought along suede covered wineskins and thermo...

This Week With Wishes

Image
To the person who felt their wish was selfish, I'd like to let them know that in my opinion wishing for something that will make you happy makes other people happy too ...and that's the opposite of selfish.
