Sioux Lookout for Dinner

Image
I dashed into the Cod Father's this afternoon after a sudden inspiration to see if they had any fresh pickerel in stock.  Lucky me!  They had some just in from Ontario.  It's usually from Manitoba and though it's a treat when you haven't had any for a while, Manitoba pickerel just doesn't seem as good as the fish we caught in the lakes near Sioux Lookout Ontario where I grew up. Tonight we'll be having a traditional Sioux inspired dinner with pan fried pickerel, wild rice that I know for sure comes from near Sioux because my dad sent it to me.  Gayle McKenzie's cucumber salad will be one of the side dishes and I think I might dig into the frozen wild blueberries for dessert.  I have no idea what I'll do with them, so feel free to share your suggestions. Mountain Lady Redux

Image
On September 30th,  I posted a photo of Black Knight Mountain, known only to me I think, as The Lady of the Mountain .  It was a back-lit photo, so the image might not have been as clear to those of you who don't look at it everyday and automatically see what I see.  I thought I'd give you a better look today and post this shot that was taken in the early afternoon. The lady lies on her side the highest point being her shoulder. If you follow the line down her arm and move into the foreground, you'll reach her elbow.  In this shot, on the right I can really see the definition of her head, her chin in particular and I can see her hair flowing down off her brow, to the right. I'm thinking you'll see it a little better now...or maybe it's just my active imagine and the influence of growing up in Sioux Lookout , not too far from The Sleeping Giant in Thunder Bay, Ontario.

This photo of my mother working at her desk, was taken in 1968 at Ontario Hydro in Sioux Lookout, Ontario .  The office was located just around the corner from the elementary school I attended and as a result every so often my Mom would show up at my classroom door just before noon to take me out for lunch.  She would hold my hand and we would cross the playground together, walk up the hill to Fifth Avenue, passing the Sarah Vaughan Public Library where I would one day work as a Page, then down the hill to Front Street and on to The Shanghai Restaurant that served Chinese and Canadian cuisine. I never needed to look at a menu since I would order the same thing every time.  Oh what a treat it was to sit in that red leather booth waiting with such anticipation while my mom patiently drank her Coca-Cola and smoked her Belvederes .   And then it would appear;  the staple of every diner in North America, a white oval plate with red stripe around the...
